A list of President Obama's Accomplishments

By SirDent

Introduction

In this article I will list a few of Obama's accomplishments. The rumors that have been working their way around the web have stated that he did nothing really that was important. What I have found is that he did many things which truly are important.

It seems Obama learned early in his political career to be shrewd and practical. Learning how to play hardball with the big wigs is a must for anyone who goes into politics. He endured racial slurs from many of the opposing party and hazing by other African American colleagues and learned how to recognize an opportunity when presented and a willingness to work with opposing party members.

Obama has a solid record of achievement during his tenure as Illinois State Senator. Some of his key votes are listed below.

He is now the 44th President of the United States. Congratulations Barack Obama!!!

Voted to end $300 million worth of tax breaks for businesses. (2004)

Voted for having Illinois endorse embryonic stem cell research. (2004)

Voted against restrictions on public funding of abortion. (2000)

Successfully co-sponsored a prescription drug discount buying club program for seniors and the disabled. (2003) Unsuccessfully co-sponsored ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation. The measure became law after Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate. (2003)

Successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform called the Gift Ban Act. (1998)

It seems Obama's eligibility trial date is now set.

HUGE NEWS! FEDERAL JUDGE Carter sets Trial Date for Obama's Eligibility!!!

Barak Obama

Death Penalty

Obama played a key role in getting death penalty laws changed in Illinois. The state had previously been deeply divided because of problems with their death penalty laws before 2003.

One key point in the new death penalty law, was how interrogations are handled. Interrogations of murder suspects, according to the new law, are to be recorded. Previously 13 death row inmates were released because they were found innocent or were convicted using improper procedures.

"We brought police officers and civil rights advocates together to reform a death penalty system that had sent 13 innocent men to death row," he declare in a recent presidential debate.

Those who worked with him described Obama as a lawmaker who is personally involved. "He is just really a good legislator," says State Sen. John Cullerton, D-Chicago.

Fairy Tales

This is really funny but so true at the same time. How many times have we heard the beginning of this fairy tale?

Statement

I apologize for this hub not being quite finished. I will add to it as I am able. As I stated in the Palin hub, I do not endorse either candidate as of this time. I am neutral. Feel free to comment and discuss, debate, argue or whatever you want but please keep it civil.

Also please check out Sarah Palin's Accomplishments.

57 States?

Nobel Peace Prize

Obama has recieved the Nobel Peace Prize. The decision has stunned many around the world. The Prize was awarded not for action, but promises more than anything. Obama hasn't had any major success in foreign policy as of yet.

Obama described himself as surprised and deeply humbled, and stated that the award is a call to action. "I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments but rather an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations," he said in the White House Rose Garden. (Direct quote in bold font.)

Who would you vote for right now to be President and Vice President?

  • Obama and Biden
  • McCain and Palin
  • Someone else

Thank you Sir Dent, you have my utmost respect.  I love information...and that is what we base our selections on!  I respect Obama because he is restraint with his attacks...and responds respectfully when attacked...that is a strong Character quality, and he has yet to get sarcastic back to Palin as she was to him..

She showed his little respect.

Thank you again for providing this information, as you did with Palin.

18 months of wearied campagning but the sparkis that next two judges to be set in power during the presidency is in need of conservative constitutionalist who will legislate the law not add their own laws who in California do their own precedents. Obama has promised he will set up liberal judges.

Thanks for the read and comment Kevin. One thing I learned over the years is that you can't rely upon promises made by anyone. They may have good intentions, but things may be different from what they believe once they get in office. Others will also lie to get in office then not worry about trying to keep their promises.

SirDent - as always I like to read your Hubs. I agree, Obama has accomplishments under his belt. For me, the question arises do those accomplishments qualify him for the Presidency? That's a much tougher question. The singular most important accomplishment Obama achieved, I believe, was his race breaking internationally acclaimed position as editor of the Harvard Law Review while he was at Harvard. He was Elected in his second year and had a staff of 80 volunteers working with him. At such an early age - 27 I think - it was remarkable. The Harvard Law Review is the most prestigous in the world. He held the position for 3 yrs. It was the very first thing he did of high undeniable quality. He did it on his own based on sheer talent and mental aptitude. Here is a picture of him surrounded by his volunteers. He is in the center holding the Sceptre.

http://www.welt.de/multimedia/archive/00415/Obama_

In the years between Columbia University and his sojourn back to Chicago, and his enrollment in Harvard (a period of 3 years - Obama was met with tough times and little appreciation. No one knows how he got to Harvard but once he got there - he did a great job. After leaving Harvard he returned to Chicago where he worked in the neighborhood which gave him his rise to Illinois office.

Thanks for the comment, PT. I believe everyone who has ever run fr the office of President were at one time unqualified. I believe Obama is qualified just as I believe MacCain is also qualified. It is a matter of choosing which one we want.

One thing I know for sure, whoever wins the election must be willing to work work congress. I know many blame our current President for the problems we have at the moment, but it is all of Congress which is to blame also. Too many pissing contests instead of working together for a common goal.

I have not read all of Obama's biography The Audacity of Hope, but I recommend everyone go to the local library and check it out for free.  He has some interesting things to say about his life, and I do believe he is an honest man.  It is time for change and Obama is ready and willing to make these changes come about.  Of course he has much to learn as president of the United States, but who else does not.  My favorite experience here at HubPages is when someone called me an Obamabot for voting for my Manchurian Candidate, but I hope they called me that all in good fun LOL.  I have been watching Obama closely and I am voting for him, but the last time I checked I was not a bot ;).  Thanks for the good hub sirdent.

As you may know I have recently decided to support Obama. It is not because I do not honor or respect McCain. Rather, much of my support comes upon the revelations that John McCain, the ultimate veteran, if there ever were one, decided recently not to support active military and veterans as he should have.

So far I have heard Obama's views and he was there to vote on issues of importance to me. I also learned that while he was in Springfield he worked on issues of importance to vets.

However, I always want to read truthful articles about all the candidates. I applaud you for writing these hubs. Truth to me is an important feature, and you are doing much better than so many of the media outlets in not allowing bias to creep into your writing. Keep it up!

We are fortunate in that the four people on the major party tickets are all good people. What we have to decide is which party best supports our own views, our own needs, and then hope that we, as individuals, also are deciding in the best interest of the nation.

I also want whoever is elected to remember that a President and V.P represent ALL the people of this nation, not only those who voted for them. Past presidents have at times forgotten that simple truth.

Again, thanks!

Sir Dent - I was reading today when I came across this article about Obama's Harvard years. As you know above - I thought it was quite an achievement. I listed it lavishly in my comparison about Obama and McCain in one of my HUBS. But this article asks the question why did Obama not mention this very high honor at his convention? That got my attention. Seems he woud have. It wasn't in the video he showed, nor did Michelle mention it. Odd, huh? Such a seemingly remarkable feat - and nothing.

Anyway - here's the link - it's to a conservative site - but I read all views.

Thank you for bringing to light some of the many good things that Barack Obama has done. Also as Marisuewirtes states he has been respectable when he has been attacked, which is a quaility that we want our kids and grandkids to have . Politics is one thing, and that is to state your plan and what you are going to do if you are elected to public office , not attacking your opponent. I know that turns me off completely.

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 3 years ago

Laringo, I appreciate your comment. Personlly I believe past accomplishments and behavior are what we need to vote on. Too many liars in the camp and have been for such a long time now. I am not trying to sway any votes one way or the other. Just want everyone to look at the accomplishments of the candidates who are being talked about most at the moment.

Melinda Vasquez 3 years ago

I am impressed with your ability to acknowledge both of the candidates accomplishments. It shows that you are; hmm, what is the word - intelligent. Although I am a passionate person, passion only has a place in persuasive arguing not informative debates. Thank you! Keep it up. There are more accomplishments that Obama has

As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois veterans get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan.

and

In the Illinois State Senate, this meant working with both Democrats and Republicans to help working families get ahead by creating programs like the state Earned Income Tax Credit, which in three years provided over $100 million in tax cuts to families across the state. He also pushed through an expansion of early childhood education, and after a number of inmates on death row were found innocent,

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 3 years ago

Thanks for the compliment Melinda. I have never been called "intelligent" before. :P I did acknowledge Obama's ability to work with mebers of the other party in the article.

My biggest problem is getting around all the lies that have told and the rumors that are going around. I did have to change one part out on the Palin hub already.

dear sirdent,

just courious, have you earned the title of "Sir" dent or is that just your screen name? Also, i would like to know how the president is actually elected??? when the votes are counted in the final stage does the people's vote really determine who will be president???

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 3 years ago

Bob, irt ismerely a screen name. In fact the person who gets the most votes by the peoiple still may not iwn the election. There are 50 states and not sure how many territories who vote, but each state and territory has a certain amount of electoral votes.

Anyway the electoral votes depend on how many people in each state. territory.

There will be some who will love them and some that will not however how many of us could take our Country by the reins and lead that many people? Talk about serious organizational skills and multi-tasking my thoughts are with them both. Would I share who I am voting for no way as some may disagree and I am one of the many who are swing voters enough said. Great Article!!!

Also, I see 74 "accomplishments" to Palin's 78. Are we comparing apples and oranges here? Do these accomplishments include getting to stick his name on something for going along with it?

Is this simply a quantitative analysis, or is quality examined as well?

Andy, these were written not long after Palin was named as VP running mate for McCain. The numbers are scores for the articles and mean nothing about Obama and/or Palin. I merely found what I could verify as being truth when I wrote these.

Good list. This verifies what I've found, that Braack Osama has done nothing to qualify him for the CEO position of president, and much to disqualify him as pro-America.

But he is de facto president, so as an independent American who actually believes in our Constitution, I will say to the people who elected him "I will give your president the same respect you gave mine".

What could be more fair?

Could Obama Be America’s First Defacto President?

Innocent Americans increasingly are sent to prison based on false evidence manufactured by police forensic crime labs. Now President Obama wants the power to incarcerate U.S. Citizens not on evidence, but for what they might do.

Compare: Two days after the 1933 burning of Germany’s Parliament Building, blamed on communists, Hitler responded with a powerful speech before Parliament. Hitler asked Parliament to suspend sections of the Reich Constitution that protected Citizens’ Rights and Civil Liberties. Hitler said the suspension was necessary so government could protect the homeland from being destroyed by communists. Hitler promised Parliament the Constitution would later be restored. After Parliament passed Hitler’s Discriminatory Decrees and Hitler signed it February 28, 1933, Hitler immediately used the news laws to abolished Parliament. See Hitler’s 1933 Discriminatory Laws below:

Obama gave a speech in May 2010, that proposed incarcerating in indefinite prolonged detention without evidence, any person government deemed a “combatant” or likely to engage in a violent act in the future; that would include U.S. Citizens “without evidence of wrongdoing.” With that amount power Obama like Hitler could arrest members of Congress, drag U.S. Citizens off the street and from their homes to be imprisoned indefinitely based only on Government’s claim they are a “combatant” or likely to engage in a violent act in the future.

If Congress approves Obama’s categories of people likely to engage in violent acts, overnight millions of lawful U.S. activists could be subject to arrest, Indefinite Prolonged Detention. When you examine Obama’s speech, it appears Obama wants retroactive power to incarcerate anyone government claims (prior) supported violent acts on the premise that person is likely to support violent acts in the future: U.S. activists would be extremely vulnerable because no activist can control what another activist or group might do illegally they network with domestically or overseas. Government would only have to allege a person; group or organization might commit a violent act in the future to order Preventative Detention of lawful participants with no evidence whatsoever. Americans would be afraid to speak out.

It is foreseeable any “individual” who writes on the Internet or verbally express an opinion against or entity of U.S. Government or its coalition partners could be deemed by authorities a “Combatant” or likely to engage in or cause violent acts: government too easily could claim an author’s writings inspired people in the past and will in the future to commit or support violent acts. It is problematic that indefinitely detained U.S. Citizens not involved in terrorism or hostile activities, not given Miranda Warnings or allowed legal counsel; interrogated, will be prosecuted for ordinary crimes because of their alleged admissions while held in indefinite “Prolonged Detention. Obama wants the power to override the U.S. Constitution. Obama wants the power to detain indefinitely any American without probable cause or evidence, based on conjecture someone might do something violent in the future.

Obama similar to Hitler is centralizing power in the federal Government by getting passed legislation the U.S. government could potentially use to intimidate and threaten corporations among others. Hitler got passed similar laws shortly before the burning of the German Parliament building blamed on the communists. Immediately after the fire, Hitler used his new laws to coerce corporations and influential Citizens to support passage of fascist legislation that suspended provisions of the German Constitution that protected Citizens’ freedoms and civil liberties. Obama is now approaching a position where he can use similar new laws, including the Patriot Act and 200 asset forfeiture laws to seize any corporation or individual’s assets; and force U.S. corporations and other institutions like Hitler did to support legislation that threatens or curtails rights of Americans.

More recently Obama has moved forward to crush Free Speech, silence his critics by pushing passage of HR 5175: this abomination will choke the 1st Amendment, denying the right of free speech to ordinary Americans. Under Title II: groups like Gun Owners of America and other groups including bloggers that only mention “public officials” within 60 days of an election, could be required to file onerous disclosures–and potentially have to disclose their membership lists—despite the Supreme Court ruling in NAACP v. Alabama that held membership lists like those of GOA's) are off limits to government control. Is Obama’s support of HR 5175 similar to what Hitler did to shut up his critics? In the run up to Parliament passing his police state laws including the 1933 Discriminatory Decrees that abolished Citizen’s Free Speech, Hitler employed thugs to beat up reporters, arrest anyone who had courage to criticize the Fuhrer or his Nazi government or expose introduced legislation. Is Obama by supporting HR 5175 to shut up his critics, trying to take American to the same place?

Alarmingly the Obama Government recently employed a vendor to search Internet social networking sites to collect information about Americans that could potentially be used by this government to injure Americans, for example, if you apply for a federal job, your name might be crossed referenced by the Obama Government with comments you made at Websites against Obama; or if you make application at a bank for a loan the Government has control since the financial crisis, could your Internet comment(s) prevent you getting that loan? Obama’s monitoring of the Internet sites can too easily be used by Government to intimidate Citizens from speaking out. Obama Top CZAR Cass Sunstein prepared a 2008 paper that proposed spying on Americans, infiltrating groups and organizations to obstruct Free Speech, disrupt the exchange of ideas and disseminate false information to neutralize Americans that might question government.

Look at what Mr. Obama has done in Michigan. Immediately upon getting elected he aggressively pushed for implemented incentives for developing factories to manufacture high powered car battery for high bread & all electric vehicles. We use to only have 2% of the international market for these high powered batteries but now because of our president; we have 20% of the market share worldwide & it has gone from 1 struggling factory to 18 factories in Michigan altogether; 30 factories at present nationwide creating jobs & revenue for our country.

U da man. I am an Independent. I didn't know who Obama was. I'm from Florida. If you want a black president, how about Kendrick Meek? I have grown to like President Obama and his family. He and his wife, Michelle are an inspiration to children in my neighborhood. He has been ostracized for claiming to be a Muslim. I saw him stand before the Islamic nations at the Egyptian conference and claim to bea Christian. His speech drew a standing ovation.

I have a military background. It wasn't cool that he didn't place the wreath on the grave of the unknown soldier. He broke with tradition to go to Chicago for some deep dish pizza. What was he thinking? He is a quick study and he did better the next year.

He is a mutt like me. When I tried to run my family tree, it put out the lights in Salt Lake City.

As far as Sarah Palin goes. I don't respect anyone who doesn't finish the job.

Still looks like you need a harp player.

LOL WD, it took me a long time to write this hub. There was so much propaganda that it was hard to sift out what was true and what was false. I changed it a few times after I first published it also because of info that was received.

I can't say that I like Obama but I don't hate him. Personally, I think he needs more backbone. Outside of that I am not sure I have anything against him. I have noticed how gray his hair has gotten since he won the election. At least that shows me that he is doing something.

The backbone thing is legit to a point. He is super laid back and is not a micro manager. Too bad, Geithner is dangerous. Still, he got Binny L. That took guts . . . it was all his call, and he had the American concept of Carter's "failure" staring him in the face. I am not crazy about the way he emptied out the treasury for TARP. They stole a lot of assets that weren't troubled from the South to make themselves look good. What's new about that? I didn't know there was anything left after Bush compliantly gave it all to those crooks and foreign investors. Where is all this money coming from? It isn't. China is going to be left crying on the stoop.
