The Evidence of Things not Seen: What Faith Is

The cast of CSI: Criminal Scene Investigation on CBS.

Introduction

A popular TV show titled CSI is about gathering evdence to solve homicides. There is a team of forensic experts who gather evidence and a popular phrase in the show is, "Go where the evidence leads you."

When gathering evidence to make a case, every tiny piece is important. They must be able to make their case without any doubt. If there is doubt, the case is no good.

Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Faith

Many have spoken about faith and say that it is blind. They say that we who believe do so simply because the Bible tells us to. They do not see the evidence that believers see. Many might say that they don't see because they chose not to. The Bible says they do not see because Satan has blinded them to the truth. We cannot force anyone to see what God has not revealed, but we can witness what God has revealed to us.

A good witness is someone who actually sees what they are witnessing about. Much like forensic experts, the evidence leads us to what actually happened. God shows us the evidence and when we see it, we then know. This is what faith is. It is knowing what God has shown you to be true.

Even though we weren't there to see Jesus hung on the cross, we know that He was there. We know what happened because of the revelation God has given us.

Forensic Evidence

As evidence is gathered, It is labeled and put aside in individual containers. Each piece of evidence is important. Photos are taken of some types of evidence which cannot be removed from the scene. After the evidence is gathered, it is taken to a lab where it is studied and pieced together. As the pieces come together, a story starts to unfold.

Even the best evidence can sometimes become contaminated. It is then tossed out and unused to make a case. In some cases evidence has been tampered with to make a case. This makes all of the evidence unreliable and false. When evidence is tampered with or represented falsely, the witness of it is a lie.

In the scripture used for this hub,  we see the second part speaks of evidence of things not seen. Even in forensic science, after all the evidence is gathered and the story put together without a shadow of a doubt, they still have not seen what happened as it happened. It is by faith that their conclusion come to what it is.

God's Evidence Contaminated

The evidence that God gives is pure and uncontaminated. Many through the years have added ideologies to the pure evidence making it of no effect. Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Mithra-ism, Zoroastrianism, and Atheism are just a few of different ideas and beliefs that have contaminated the pure evidence.

All in all, they are all a part of the new age system of beliefs, which include Gnosticism and Agnosticism. The New Age belief started when Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil. It was their transgression that all flesh inherits. It is what caused them to change into different creatures. They went from eternal life to death.

How do we know what is pure?

God tells us what us pure. The Bible is the Word of God. The evidence proves this to be true. Man can simply look around at the diversities of life and see that it did not come by an accident as Evolutionists seem to believe. If we read the Bible we see that it starts, "In the Beginning God Created." Nothing is said here about things coming by chance or coincidence. We know that it was all designed by a being mightier than we are.

We can also see the personality of God in the world. Gnostics and Agnostics, (to my knowledge), believe God to be a force but nothing more. They don't believe that he has a personality and even displays emotions. Man was created in the image and likeness of God. Men have emotions so since we are similar to God He must have emotions also.

What is the most important piece of evidence to prove that Jesus is the Son of the Living God?

John 5:36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

The works Jesus spoke of in this verse were the works that He did on a daily basis. He healed the sick, open blind eyes, cleansed lepers, etc. . . He was also talking about the work that was ahead of Him at the time. This work was going to the cross. He didn't go because it was His desire to die, but it was His desire to save man from their sinful ways.

When Jesus' works witness of Him, they show the evidence that He is who He says He is. Many agree that Jesus was a good man and even a great teacher, but in doing so they fail to realize who He really is.

John 2:19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

This is one of the works that Jesus spoke about. Notice that he didn't say the Father will raise it up in three days. He said, "I will raise it up." This is very profound for someone who is merely a teacher. If many believe Him to only be a great teacher or a good moral man, then they must also believe He was a liar.

Jesus died a death He did not deserve. He was counted among thieves and murderers, yet all that He did was always good. As He hung on the cross He said, "Luke 23:46 Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost." Death could not come to Him on its own. Death seeks out all who have sinned, "Romans 6:23 The wages of sin is death." In order for Jesus to die, He had to humble Himself and give in to death. He was perfect and, though He was tempted at all points, He never sinned.

Jesus was buried in a garden tomb. A stone was rolled against the entrance of the tomb and sealed with the Roman seal. This was not a small rock that could be picked up and carried by one man. Anyone who was caught breaking the seal was put to death by Crucifixion. Remember how all Jesus’ disciples ran when he was arrested.

The stone would have weighed between 1,500 and 2000 pounds. Not an easy object to move around. Guards were placed at the tomb. These were trained guards who were commanded to kill anyone who attempted to steal the body of Jesus.

Some have said that Jesus wasn't really dead but near death. I am sure this may make sense to some but what doesn't make sense is how He got out of the tomb if He was so near death. Surely He would not be able to move such a huge stone by Himself. You must also remember the guards outside and His disciples were cowards.

Conclusion

Evidence witnesses events, accidents, murders, robberies, etc. . . Good evidence shows what happened. Just as forensic experts gather evidence to piece together what happened and how it happened without actually seeing the event that took place, we can look at the evidence that was given to us and know what really happened. Faith is not blindly following. It is following according to the evidence presented.

I want to acknowledge Josh McDowell. I found his site not long ago and used some information from it in this hub.

I realize that many will refuse the evidence presented here. They want to touch, taste, smell, see with their fleshly eyes, and hear with their fleshly ears. If there is not enough evidence presented, here you can get more evidence yourself. It requires humility to get it.

Simply ask God to reveal Himself to you. Do it with your heart not just to try and prove someone right or another wrong. You must want the proof for yourself just so you will know for sure.

Scared to Death of Hell 2 years ago

hey Dent, how does a flower, the sky, the ocean, life, the genetic code, the universe, tell us that Jesus Christ is Lord? Perhaps there's more to this scripture than you care to know. And if God created it all, shouldn't everything be happening exactly as planned, as the bible states?

My appologies Silly. Now I understand the question. Yes, there are things happening that the bible said would happen. For the last 2000 years the organized churches have begun teaching of several false christs. And I can't think of one major church doctrine that is scriptural.

I fellowship with like minded believers when I can. But what you call church just doesn't base many of its teachings on scriptures. Sure, they mention various scriptures. But they are clueless of the higher spiritual meanings of them. But if you like, please provide me with one major church doctrine that is scriptural.

The Baptism of the Holy Ghost.

Hope Hells Not Too Hot Cuz I Don't Tithe 2 years ago

And how is this understood by the church Dent? Let me guess, you still think that this is a physical ritual where people have their heads dipped in water? That ritual was to be a type of the spiritual baptism that takes place when God grants individuals the holy spirit. Water is symbolic of new beginnings. In the OT there are at least 2 instances where passage over water lead to new beginnings. The holy spirit represents new beginnings through true understandings. Here's a third application of water in scripture. Water represents death. The flood killed the evil world of people. They are dead but will live again. Part of the reason for the symbolic babtism is so that when one goes under the water, their carnal nature of the past dies. You probably don't realize this, but those recorded baptisms by John the Baptist did not spiritually baptise anybody (Christ was physically baptised as an example). But nobody was given the holy spirit until pentacost. Today, few have been given this holy spirit. Therefore, few have been spiritually baptised. I'm not 100% sure that people are spiritually baptised while physically alive but that's beside the point. The point is, is that the churches practice of water baptism is useless.

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 2 years ago

Baptism of the Holy Ghost is spiritual. It is shown mostly by speaking in tongues as the spirit gives the utterance. Water baptism is an outward sign of an inward change.

There are more who have been baptized in the Holy Ghost than you think.

Born to Burn? Hope Not!! 2 years ago

If anything, it is shown by understanding the scriptures for what they are as well as by living a Godly life by following God's laws. Tongue speaking is no more than a carnal act of trying to prove one's worth to man. I've known a few people who as kids faked the whole ability to win the approval of others and avoid critisism of those who "have" that ability. By the way, there have been many tongue speaking sessions recorded, analysed and shown to be fake due to several repeats of sounds.

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 2 years ago

So are you syaing the dsiciples didn't speak in tongue on the day of pentecost?

I know there are many who "fake" it. I have seen it myself. As far as repetitive sounds, have you ever simply said, "Praise God" over and over? It is not a good case.

Wish god Had known About Weak Man Before Creating Dungeon of Fire 2 years ago

So say "Praise God" over and over. I don't believe that so called tongue speaking has any application of the spirit. Don't know if the decipals spoke in tongues or not. What do the scriptures say? If they did, then it was not so that God would understand them better. I'm quite certain that the speaking in tongues was more of a way to communicate with foreign nations about God. Even if speaking in tongues were a spiritual gift to better communicate with God, the mere fact that people do it in the presence of man shows that it is a carnal attribute for the sake of puffing one up. So Dent, I originally asked about major church doctrines. We could either argue tongue speaking til time immortal or you can offer another possibilty. Didn't you once say something about christ being made sin? You must have changed your thinking on that because you never got back with that Dan fellow on it. Besides, we're talking about major church doctrines. Tongue speaking applies only to those over the top churches where people handle deadly snakes and stuff. What other doctine do you have for us?

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 2 years ago

Christ was made sin. God poured Himself into the body of man. The flesh is sin.

Psa 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

It took me a long time to figure out what this scripture meant. God had to bring me to the place to where I could understand it. It means he was born in flesh and conceived in flesh.

Tongue speaking is not for those who handle snakes. I don't believe in snake handling and never did.

When someone is praying and start speaking in tongues while praying, why do you try and listen to their prayers? Are you trying to find out if they had sinned so you can use it against them?

You keep trying to get off-track here. Why? You notice the title of this hub is about evidence of things we cannot see.

You are attempting to turn it into a personal attack. Of course you can say it is ordained of God. According to your beliefs it will be ordained of God if I deny any further comments from you.

I am not syaing I will do that, but only if I did. As long as you do not attack me of any other commentator, I will approve them.

Fire Fire!! It Burns!! 2 years ago

2 Cor. 5:21

For Him who knew no Sin, He made a sin-offering on our behalf, that we might become God's Righteousness in Him. (Emphatic Diaglott).

For the One not knowing sin, He makes to be a sin offering for our sakes that we may be becoming God's righteousness in Him. (Concordant N. T.)

It's my understanding that only one word is being translated into sin offering and it is actually from the word sin (chattaah). However, all of the times it is translated sin offering in the O.T. it was also only one word with the direct translation of sin. The Hebrews did in fact, consider their sacrifices sin offerings. Two hundred years before Christ, about seventy scholars translated the Hebrew O.T. into the Greek O.T. and translated the single Herew word for sin into sin offering. I'm sure that they understood the meanings of the Hebrew.

Now, how can it be proven that the one word in the O.T. must be translated into two words?

Lev. 4:29

And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering (2403) and slay the sin offering (2403) in the ;lace of the burnt offering (5930).

Notice that the one word for burnt is translated burnt offering. Offering was understood by the ancient Hebrews.

And no, offering is 7133 so burnt is 5903. Let's check how the Hebrews identified words in context.

Lev. 4:23

Or if his sin(2403), wherein he hath sinned (2398) come to his knowledge;, he shall bring his offering (7133) a kid of the goats, a male without blemish.

The word for offering speaks of sin, burnt and trespass offering. In Leviticus alone, the one word for sin is correctly translated sin offering 54 times.

Also Exe. 44:29

They shall eat the meat offering(4503) and the sin offering (2403) and the trespass offering (817) and every dedicated thing in Israel shall be theirs.

So what does this have to do with the N.T.? The one word for sin in the context of making atonement, must be translated sin offering.

1 Cor. 5:7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our passover was sacrificed for us.

Passover comes right out of the O.T. and the Hebrews knew that it was an offering and not sin itself.

So Dent, the only way to back the doctrine that christ was made to be sin is through understanding the King James word for word. I stand by what I say. Not a single major church doctrine is scriptural.

I enjoy reading your hubs, but this one seems like one giant circular argument: your "evidence" is not anything we can actually physically examine, but is anecdotal (at best) to it's core, which we can accept as "truth" because it is contained in the Word of God, which we "know" to be the Word of God because of the "evidence" therein, which we can assume to be accurate because it is contained in the Word of God....etc. You need a concrete jumping off point to make a case like this. Otherwise, still very good writing.

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 2 years ago

That seems to be the generic answer for anyone who don't believe pay2. The fact is that Jesus existed, He was killed on a cross and buried. On the third day He arose from the grave.

The witness of many is too great to ignore. Many saw Jesus and testified to the fact after He rose.

"Many saw" according to the very book whose veracity is in question in the first place! Your argument is identical to stating that Superman really existed and can fly and stop speeding locomotives because Lois Lane said so, and the Daily Planet has pictures to prove it. Many saw him do it!

Ok, this appears to be a topic about the Truth of God and man's religious ideas. Because I also feel that if Christ is the final sacrifice for our sins and the final offering, then why is there still tithing since the Old Covenant is done away? See Matthew 5:17-18.

Malysa DeWitt profile image

Malysa DeWitt 2 years ago

Tithing is a church families way to take care of the church body or the community. Because God blesses you with your job or how ever you make your money, not tithing would almost be like stealing from God. And when you tith, even if you do not have enough to do so, it seems that God always provides and some how you always have enough for all other bills and etc. Tithing is just our sacrifice to the church, it is a small sacrifice when compared to what Jesus did for us on the cross, and a great way to keep the church in running order and to care for church members in need. In the new testement, many of the books are letters written to churches and it talks about how the members had either turned corrupt or against one another. It also says all through out those books that we are to remain close as a church until the bridegroom comes to get his bride. Tithing really should not be a huge deal because money is man made, and when we pass and are carried away by Jesus, money is not coming with us. What better way to use it than to give it to the church?

Marius, tithing isn't something you "HAVE" to do. Tithing in and of itself is something done with gladness of heart. "God loves a cheerful giver." If you don't want to give, then it is best to keep it. I will say that God blesses those who have giving hearts.

I appreciate the read and comment and hope this helps you to understand along with Malysa's comment.

Great article SirDent, and it seems to have only sparked a debate on many levels! I would like to ask Dan (or whomever is behind all the alias'), where do you find the doctrine of Hell and such in the Bible? My concordance defines Hell/Hades/Sheol, etc as the grave. I understand "eternal fire" to be "burned up forever", as in never to exist again. I am looking for a better Paleo-Hebrew concordance, however...

SirDent, this is a fantastic Hub with a lot of research involved. One answer does need a comment. Water baptism is not useless. It is a public demonstration of our obedience to God's Will. Let us step back from the theology for a second. Are we afraid to publicly announce and demonstrate our faith in a society where doing so forces you to become a Majority of One?

In the flesh, we may have fear. In the spirit, we do not as it is in the spiritual realm we see what others cannot. We see the evidence they cannot. God gives us the wisdom and understanding to piece this evidence together. We cannot profess what we do not understand ourselves.

Have you ever testified in a trial?

Upon the conclusion of your testimony, you will be tested by the opposition. An attorney who was listening to your every word and watching your body language. Looking for holes. Looking for opportunities to discredit you and/or your testimony.

Will he or she find any?

Hello Sir Dent...The evidence that is presented comes from the bible, the very book that is in question for authenticity. Now don't get me wrong because I'm very strong and solid christian. I'm just playing "devil's advocate" wanting answers for myself. The Bible was written and translated many times over by scibes. There are many simple mistakes such as simple Aramaic to Greek spelling errors also found in the latin Vulgate translation. There are also contradictions in scripture that I have studied and have since resolved them. The Bible is said to be inspired by the Holy spirit, if so, why all the minor errors. There should be NO errors since God had control in the writing of Holy Scripture. God Bless, your friend Gary.....

I want to applaud you SirDent on a hub well written. If I wasn't already a Christian, this one certainly would've done it for me. Certainly Evangelistic in nature. Although you're not a preacher you certainly write like one. God Bless!!

You are wrong about some religions you say do not believe God has emotions, etc.

And Yahshua was showing us that since he can raised his body so can we.

Even your friend Paul said if we have the mind in us that was in Yahshua, that the spirit (our spirit, it didn't say holy spirit) would raise us up too. Having thoughts like Yahshua is the key. Love, mercy, servitude, complete faith in God.

Deborah, I wonder how many times you have raised yourself up from the dead. I also think about all those who died. How many of them raised themselves up?

Only God can raise the dead, but if you think you can do it yourself, then by all means, have a go at it.

Yahshua is not, was not God. He never claimed to me.

uh SirDent you haven't been to many hospitals now have you. I should say that you don't know Lonnie Honeycutt either. Surgeons and Doctor's of mere human's, and not all have the same FAITH as you say they should have, do raise the dead all the time.

Broken records are hard to hear. Jesus said, "If you do not believe what I say believe the works that I do." Salvation is the Lord's. J

esus is Immanuel, which means God with us. (((Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.)))

LG, howe positive are you that those doctors raised the dead? It doesn't make any difference anyway. Jesus didn't say someone will raise me up but He said He would raise himself up.

How many times have you raised yourself up from the dead?

You haven't read all of that Bible either when Jeus said that we will do greater things than he did.

Oh and it does make a BIG difference you just refuse to see it as what it is. Open your mind and let the real Jesus in and he will show you more things than you could ever know.Just because you don't accept anything that any one of us says does mean it isn't real.

What Jesus said about doing greater things has nothing to do with the topic at hand. You have to remember who Jesus was speaking to and what He actually meant. There are those who deny the power of God and believe the power is their own power.

Everyone wants to voice their own opinion. Voice it but know this, it is only an opinion and actually means nothing. The only opinion that matters is God's opinion. All opinions that differ with God are nothing but dung.
