How Does Satan (the devil) Tempt Us?

71

By SirDent

Satan knows what it takes to cause us to ponder committing a sin or doing something we aren't supposed to do. He uses the pride of the flesh to cause us to sin or tempt us to sin. This is how he deceived Eve in the garden of Eden and he uses the same method to tempt us today.

He knows where we are weak and what causes us problems in our walks with the Lord. Once it is said and done, pride is the reason we reach out for what we are tempted with.

Satan will use those who are closest to us to tempt us. He will use your wife, husband, children, mother or father to tempt you. One thing Satan cannot do is to make us do something wrong. You can give him a gun but he cannot use it. He can get someone else to use it but cannot use it himself.

Satan will use your old friends to tempt you. Those you used to run around with drinking and doing many other things that you shouldn't do. They will try to pull you back into the old life that you left behind when you accepted Jesus into your heart.

Satan will also use some that you go to church with to tempt you. I know it's hard to fathom for many of you but it's true. Many are weak and don't know any better. Some are strong and just don't care. One thing I believe should be stressed about this topic. No matter what temptation comes up before you, you have the power to resist it.

Unclean spirits

Unclean spirits are always contrary to God. The flesh of man could possibly be called an unclean spirit. That isn't what this hub is about though. It is about the evil and wicked spirits of the world that do indeed manipulate men and women into doing things that are evil and wicked. Rapes and murders everywhere all around the world. Unclean spirits are what cause these. Nobody can say there aren't unclean spirits in the world.

What is the most dangerous spirit? My opinion is the one that will tell almost the whole truth, but tell enough of a lie to draw someone off the right track. It might tell 95% truth and 5% lie. It will seem to be right, but not right. It's a simple concept to understand. Unclean spirits have many different voices. They pretend to be God, but yet fall short. They want to be revered as God and are by many different people.

My question now is, do you worship an unclean spirit?

Why Satan Torments People

Knowing that many people believe that Satan isn't a real being causes me to look at what the Word of God says about him. He is evil and wicked and nothing good can come from him. He is a liar and a thief and goes about seeking to steal, kill, and destroy. Why would Satan do these things? What are his motives? I will do my best to answer these questions in this article.

Satan was originally created by God and had a seat in Heaven. He was the most beautiful of all of God's angels. I can imagine how he looked at himself. Pride rose up in Satan and he said in his heart that he would put his throne above the throne of God. This shows that he had contempt for God. He hated God with a passion.

Satan's pride was what caused him to be cast down to the earth. There is no place in heaven for sin to dwell.

When God created man, He created him in His own image and likeness. We are all like God in image and likeness. Satan knows he can't hurt God. God already had him cast out of heaven and Satan wants nothing more to do with God directly. So what does he do to get back at God?

He torments those who God loves and are similar God in image and likeness. He will do everything in his power to cause us to sin and will cause us to be separated from God by the same sins. He can't force us to sin but can only put the thought, concept, or temptation before us.

He will continue to do this until he is cast into the lake of fire. I hope this explains it well enough to make it easy to understand.

The name Devil means to "throw". He just throws and throws these evil ideas to us until it becomes a full concept to us. Then for some reason, we succumb to these temptations, knowing fully well that it is wrong. Thank God for His faithfulness and never-ending forgiveness.

May we all learn how to resist the devil so he would just flee!

thanks for sharing.

SirDent;

Thanks for writing this and referring me to it. As you know, I have been wondering how to wage battle against satan who thrives on hubpages.

Satan is so tricky. He cannot be stopped by our own accord, but he is known to be no match for Jesus. We need the protection of our savior to spot all the deceit of the enemy. If we want to eliminate our sin, we have the power through Jesus to do that.

I am glad that you cleared up for me that satan uses people exclusively in the physical form. I think this is a key distinction that may help us fight satan. If we just realize that all that are not with God are against Him, we then realize that satan is in all who are not with God. Then, we can realize that our battle is with the devil in those people not with God.

Then, the fight is clear, and it is not personal. Those who fight for God fight against satan who exists in those not in God's army.

I guess I struggle with those who proclaim religious neutrality. I know that it sends the atheists into orbit, but I believe His word that we are either for him or against Him. That is not to say that I would do anything to anyone. That is not me, but if we cannot see who the enemy really is, we are bound to lose the fight. This is clearly a fight against satan.

Great hub. I'm glad you did it. We all need to be reminded how he works and to keep our spiritual eyes open for it. As for what you said about people in church, it's true, but sad. I have heard many preachers say that while we are sitting in church to look around and less than half of those you sit in church with on Sunday mornings will be in Heaven. How sad is that? You are so right, he uses every single thing he can to tempt us and get us off track of our mission. Keep up the great work for Him. As always, you have my respect. Blessings to you and your family.

VP and allshookup, I appreciate your comments. Satan throws everything at us that he possibly can, but it is always through another person. We must keep our shield of faith at the ready at all times to quench his fiery darts.

Your saying satan possesses the ones close to you in order to temp your will. You realize satan would also be using you as a tool to temp the ones that love you. I for one am not a tool for satan as your paranoia seems to tell you. Perhaps instead of blaming your mistakes on the temptations of satan you will live up to them as God would expect you to do. Satan will never be powerful enough to temp the Godfull...this makes me worried for some of the posters in this thread that think your loved ones are out to hurt you. Shame on you.

Alumin, I think you need to go back and actually read this article instead of skimming it over. I also think you should check the Word of God out and see what kind of power Satan does have. He is not a weakling by any means. He can destroy whoever God allows him to and he is the tempter.

Alumin 3 years ago

SirDent I think you actually need to read over what you wrote as I'm directly referring to what you said. "Satan will use those who are closest to us to tempt us. He will use your wife, husband, children, mother or father to tempt you". What you just said is the ones you love are possessed by satan...and that if your loved ones are believers in God... satan uses YOU to tempt everyone you love. So if satan is using everyone to temp eachother your surely invisioning a godless world. None of my loving family would ever submit to the powers of satan to temp other loved ones unless they where followers of satan themselves.

"One thing Satan cannot do is to make us do something wrong. You can give him a gun but he cannot use it. He can get someone else to use it but cannot use it himself." So if satan can't make us do something wrong then how is he using your family to temp you? Wouldn't this be wrong? He can't use the gun himself but he can make others use it? Again, this would be making someone do something wrong and you just said in the begining of the sentance that he can't...

"Satan will use your old friends to tempt you. Those you used to run around with drinking and doing many other things that you shouldn't do. They will try to pull you back into the old life that you left behind when you accepted Jesus into your heart." Jesus himself drank wine, and your assuming that your old life was full of sin before you accepted jesus. Accepting Jesus doesn't make you a righteous person...you have to use his will as a guidline. Also what if your old friends have also accepted Jesus...are you questioning the power and will of god? Do you think your the only capable friend in the group to accept God? This sounds very selfish to me...in fact if your old friends went by your words surley they would think you are a bad influence as well....

"Satan will also use some that you go to church with to tempt you. I know it's hard to fathom for many of you but it's true. Many are weak and don't know any better. Some are strong and just don't care. One thing I believe should be stressed about this topic. No matter what temptation comes up before you, you have the power to resist it." Once again you take the blame off yourself and put it on other people. If people that you go to church with temp you...then surely your doing satans work as well to temp them. You are acting like everyone but yourself is being used to temp for sin when you make one sided conclusions like that.

Overall SirDent, I belive you are blinded by satan and doing his work as we speak. You are far confused and self indulged. The things you say are one sided and selfish. I beleive your writings are to put fear and paranoia in your readers as you tell them satan is wandering in people of wedlock!! This is outrageous and surely if you where a true follower of GOD you would know that he is much greater than satan and would not allow it. SirDent speaks in toungues of the devil as he is the one temping you...making you weary and unsure about your loved ones.

I take it as a huge insult that you say that satan is using this man. That is the furtherst thing from the truth. I however have read and see how this man acts on this board. He is being used of God. If you would read the hub as how it was written it would help you. To me he is telling me to keep my eyes open for satan is a roaming lion seeking whom he may devour and he will stop at nothing to hurt or tempt those who follow Christ. He will use anyone or anything he can. It seems you are looking for things wrong with this hub and not reading it to see how it can help you. SirDent serves God, I see it in his hubs and posts. I hate that you can't see that. Because if you could open your eyes to see what SirDent is, you would recieve a blessing as those of us who know him do. 1 John 4

1Beloved, every spirit believe not, but prove the spirits, if of God they are, because many false prophets have gone forth to the world;

2in this know ye the Spirit of God; every spirit that doth confess Jesus Christ in the flesh having come, of God it is,

3and every spirit that doth not confess Jesus Christ in the flesh having come, of God it is not; and this is that of the antichrist, which ye heard that it doth come, and now in the world it is already.

4Ye -- of God ye are, little children, and ye have overcome them; because greater is He who [is] in you, than he who is in the world.

5They -- of the world they are; because of this from the world they speak, and the world doth hear them;

6we -- of God we are; he who is knowing God doth hear us; he who is not of God, doth not hear us; from this we know the spirit of the truth, and the spirit of the error.

7Beloved, may we love one another, because the love is of God, and every one who is loving, of God he hath been begotten, and doth know God;

8he who is not loving did not know God, because God is love.

9In this was manifested the love of God in us, because His Son -- the only begotten -- hath God sent to the world, that we may live through him;

10in this is the love, not that we loved God, but that He did love us, and did send His Son a propitiation for our sins.

11Beloved, if thus did God love us, we also ought one another to love;

12God no one hath ever seen; if we may love one another, God in us doth remain, and His love is having been perfected in us;

13in this we know that in Him we do remain, and He in us, because of His Spirit He hath given us.

14And we -- we have seen and do testify, that the Father hath sent the Son -- Saviour of the world;

15whoever may confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God in him doth remain, and he in God;

16and we -- we have known and believed the love, that God hath in us; God is love, and he who is remaining in the love, in God he doth remain, and God in him.

17In this made perfect hath been the love with us, that boldness we may have in the day of the judgment, because even as He is, we -- we also are in this world;

18fear is not in the love, but the perfect love doth cast out the fear, because the fear hath punishment, and he who is fearing hath not been made perfect in the love;

19we -- we love him, because He -- He first loved us;

20if any one may say -- `I love God,' and his brother he may hate, a liar he is; for he who is not loving his brother whom he hath seen, God -- whom he hath not seen -- how is he able to love?

21and this [is] the command we have from Him, that he who is loving God, may also love his brother.

n the verses it doesn't mention Satan or his tmeptaions at all. That is the point -If John didn't mention them then where is the rest of his story in conjuction with all the others who said that Satan tempts men?

If you love then God is in you and that is what is states in those scriptures. There is no room for fear and that is supposed to be of satan. Satan is not overpowering God--not in these scriptures. John says that there is no room for fear in you if you love-----it even goes as far as to say that he loved us fisrt and not the other way around---so that would make sense that Satna cannot tempt us and he has no poser over us at allo. If you ignore something or someone for a long time--then that person goes away and becomes no more.

Satna can't have as much power as you or anyone else says, else there would be no world and no God and God will have none of that! He would just wipe him out--and whose to say that he hasn't done this already---according to the words of John God is Love and Love is God and there is no room for anything else.

The point being in relation to your hub is that Satan can't tempt us if we do a simple things such as Love. Do you love SirDent? I think you do and you do alot--so how can Satan tempt you if you already have God and Jesus in your being. The scriptures say simply not to fear. So don't let fear drive you or anyone else here.

LG said:

"If you ignore something or someone for a long time--then that person goes away and becomes no more."

If people were to use that sort of thinking, then that would mean that an atheist can "will away" God by denying His existence and ignoring His love. The universe that God sustains would then ceast to exist.

"Satan can't have as much power as you or anyone else says, else there would be no world and no God and God will have none of that! He would just wipe him out--and whose to say that he hasn't done this already---according to the words of John God is Love and Love is God and there is no room for anything else."

God wants all the angels and humans to have genuine free will; otherwise, we would be nothing more than animals or robots. Satan chose to disobey God, and thus far, God has stepped back and allowed that. And though it is Satan who tempts us to sin, God has given us the free will either to obey Him or sin. Satan has the power to tempt us to sin, but only we have the power to actually commit our personal sin.

If we choose to accept God's will and not give in to temptation, then God will help us beat sin by driving Satan and his temptations away from us. But if we choose to reject God's will, then God will have no choice but to step back and let Satan drive us toward sin and away from the Truth. And this is not because God is either evil or weak; it is because He wants us to have free will without Him forcing us into a decision. God Himself has free will, obviously, and in order for us to be a better reflection of Himself, his GIVES us this free will and the choice to reflect Him even more.

The beast, false prophet, sin, death, Lucifer itself has been defeated.

Death/Sin have no power over you; you are NOT UNDER LAW but covered in Grace.

As CF said, man is drawn by HIS OWN lust, not satan.

so why the concern over the 'devil'?

Twenty One Days, yes Jesus defeated Satan. He has not been cast into the lake of fire just yet. Though we have the victory in Jesus, we still must fight. Jesus was tempted by Satan just as we are.

Simple & Sincere 21 months ago

Because of who and what God is; Wise, Just, Love, and Powerful, Satan was defeated from the foundation of the earth. But I have come to understand, by the grace of God through my Lord Jesus Christ that Satan and the fallen angels are permitted by God to try and test those who call themselves "His", are "in Christ". This permission of evil during this time in God's creation is for the sake of testing and proving His saints. This permission has limits for now (Rev 7:1), but when the last of our Lord's "little Flock" has been sealed in their mind and heart (forehead Rev 7:1-3) with the absolute and accurate truth of God or hear and do as James writes (James 1:22), then the four winds that are being restrained will be let loose and the earth will be ushered from the time of "birth pangs" of the Great Tribulation into the full fury of unrestrained demonic activity referred to by Daniel 12:1 and spoken of again by our Lord in Matthew 24:21 a time where all flesh would be destroyed if this unrestrained activity were not stopped by our King Jesus the Christ and His body (little flock) Remember this little flock along with Christ (Eph 5:23) is given the Kingdom (Luke 12:32). This "stopping" is the binding of Satan (Rev 20:2) and the final judgement of the fallen angels (1 Cor 6:3) who by the grace of God were given this time to repent for Jesus' blood was shed for them too (see Eph 1:10)

Satan is the great deceiver, and the father of all lies, it is indeed possible for Satan to use anyone at all to try and cause us to fall, both them and you. Satan can use individuals, or an established group, friends, family, or foe, but it does not mean that any of those knowingly, or intentionally conspired to cause you to fall, they may be completely unaware of the error, only to discover along with you that something they encouraged, was in fact wrong. Pride is a sin, and one that God hates, and seperates us from Him, yet family and friends can often encourage proud behaviour within other 'wonderful' family members. It really can be that subtle, that simple, and we all make mistakes, and our mistakes can indeed corrupt others, and our family and friends being the closest to us, are first in the firing line, it does NOT mean they worship Satan, or that they do not love Jesus, it just means they have made a mistake, or been disobedient at that time, and their behaviour shaped your behaviour, IF YOU HAVE LET IT DO SO.

When Jesus said "get behind Me Satan," when Peter spoke as he did, OUT OF HIS LOVE FOR JESUS REMEMBER, Jesus said "get behind Me," to Satan, NOT to Peter, then He explained to Peter, his error in challenging His Word, remember, God cannot lie, Jesus had told Peter the Truth, but Peter didn't want to hear that Jesus would suffer and be killed, BECAUSE PETER LOVED AND CARED FOR JESUS.

Satan was trying, through the opportune moment provided by Peter's comment, to undermine the resolve of Jesus to lay down His Life, and if you think it wasn't difficult for Jesus to lay down His life, read the account of Jesus falling to His knees in prayer, sweating drops like blood, and asking God to remove Him from the responsibilty (cup), "yet NOT My will, but Your Will be done."

Jesus knew the pain and suffering He would go through, it was not a walk in the park for Him, He had to overcome His fears, and find the courage to accept His resposibility, I think people often fail to understand that; Satan used what Peter said, to challenge Jesus' courage and resolve, to try and undermine it. THERE WAS NO EVIL INTENT ON PETER'S PART! Peter just forgot, God does not lie, Jesus was not jesting, Jesus was talking of events that would take place, whether peter wanted it or not.

Peter spoke from both love, and fear; Jesus spoke, to keep Peter's fear, from undermining His resolve and courage.

Peter was NOT possessed by Satan, or a demon, though for a moment, you could say he was possessed by error, but correction removed the error - "the Truth shall set you free" - but three were there - Jesus, Peter, and Satan (meaning adversary); the force with which Satan came against Jesus, using Peter's words, is known only to Jesus Himself, Peter would not have known. From my own experience, Satan can fall upon you as a very heavy weight, a great burden, of great torment, unleashed by nothing more than words, words our minds wrestle with.

As we take less notice of people who are not friends and family, friends and family are a useful tool for Satan to use, if the opportunity arises; but to be fair, Satan will use any opportunity - we are held responsible to remain alert, and lovingly faithful, and our correction saves the very lives of others remember - but only God's Word is Truth - we are NOT to create a Gospel of our own. And God will not let us be tempted, beyond what we are able to bear. "Resist the Devil, and he WILL flee from you" - "get behind Me Satan." Resist temptation, you can if you wish to, but you need to be able to recognize temptation when it comes, however it comes, through whom ever it comes, or by whatever it is encouraged.

Hello SirDent,

I will answer your question to this hub page.

-Satan always find a way to tempt us into doing anything whatsoever and what not he doesnt care what it is eventually, he throws things at us , like the rest of you guys said i agree, you probally wont believe this but im 15 and writing the way i write would suprise you very much , but im getting off topic , so again ,Satan does whatever he wants to us but he gets someone else do the damage never him . & also i really dont know why he does that. He wants to see us suffer? and maybe thats an answer he probally does. GOD is where you need to be, dont let Satan get to you , REMINDER * he tempts people & hes a tempter. He will throw whatever the cause may be at you and believe me you all guys dont want to be that way, Everyone will be safe with god..he will protect all of you,even though he doesnt show it , he does , and he makes things happen when he can.

and that is all i have to say..

Satan attacked me in the area of sexuality and impurity, as hard as I tried, I find myself falling for the same thing over and over again. I prayed and repenteed and read my bible but seemed weak. Two things helped me alot. One I listened to good teaching on getting understanding, I listened to a man called Andrew Wommack (awmi.net) audio is free. It really helped. Secondly. I started to understand that Satan uses the images - memories in my own mind to flash back in my mind temptations and situations that will appeal to my flesh.

Notice how Satan makes his way in this blog that shines light on truth? He'll do it by twisting words, or by distractions. We see it evident several times by a couple of posters right here. Evidence the devil worms his way in, using those who claim to know God. I'm reminded of the verse "Lord, Lord...". Don't be offended by what you read from others who are ignorant of the Bible's warnings. Instead see it as a demonstration of the message SirDent is conveying to us.

Just think about it...I've sworn to never sleep or be seduced by another man's wife, I said I'd never touch a young girl (I'm 30), these are the most powerful forces that govern the flesh, lust, temptation and adultery - the ultimate sin. I've boasted to friends at how righteous I was, and all these years have resisted meeting up with a married ex-gf, etc. BUT IT DOESN"T STOP. In one day, I had two harlot women, a young school girl, an ex-gf, a divorcee banker who is about to be married, all tempting me in some strange way. The first two are friends and were downright direct as to what they wanted, a young girl barely legal, living in my building, started showing me subtle sexual attention, an ex-gf who tried countless times to get me to meet up with her, and she lives in Australia, perfect life and job, husband and child.

This is the ultimate of temptations, once you commit, there is no turning back. Never rub another man's rhubarb, for the fury of an enraged husband, is sheer thunder, and nothing can stop his waves of rage. An angry father is even worse. Some of these women have everything in life, yet they are compelled to look and desire for things they cannot and shouldn't have. The devil is real, he sees our weakness and tempts us through others, even near and dear ones - a childhood sweetheart, a cousin sister. An orgasm is nothing, decades of guilt, misery and punishment is horrendous. Critics will call it natural, and call me stupid loser, but who can save your life when murder is on the mind of a distraught husband or father, when the cops come and yank my ass of to jail, the humiliation and embarrassment to my family, my life of righteousness down the drain, the mockery of others even family, suicidal thoughts through heavy depression...the list is endless. Read Proverbs Chapter 6 and so on. It speaks volumes of what really exist in our world. Once you say yes, there's no turning back.

I leave the object of love in God's hands, I'm ready for death at any time, but not at the hands of temptation and immorality.

I try to keep my mind clear of doubt and negative thoughts. Sometimes it can be hard to have a peaceful mind. God gave us a great gift. He expects us to guide others when someone is in need of help and to be shown the way of a peaceful mind. I just want to say if someone is struggling please help them find the right answers. Please help them truly find God. When you can shield away all the temptations you can begin to feel closer to God. Good deeds alone may not get you into heaven, but when you do good things(out of the goodness of your heart) it will create a lifestyle that is with no doubt in your minds pure and right. Peaceful morality every day.

Temptations come our way all the times but to every temptation, the good Lord gives us the strength to over come it. It's only up to us to say YES OR NO to the devil and he will shamefully flee from us.

Yes I see all the fiery darts and the whiles of the devil each and everyday of my life. The only way not to give in to temptation is to summit to God resist the devil and he will flee. Also Palms 91 says that he that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the almighty. If I am not in in Him, I'm into my own head, I am prey!!!
