Where can I refer others to go to get free food?

Free Food

Many people would like to know where to get free food. The homeless situation in the US is a very bad one. There are over 700,000 homeless people in the US alone. Unfortunately, many go hungry because they don't know where to turn to get food.

In this hub I am going to try and explore the possibilities of how to get food for free. I also know that some places may not give food to just anybody. There are certain requirements that must be met. Eligibility requirements include income, how much property you own, how much money you have in bank accounts, and what money you pay out each month for essentials such as electricity, phone, water, sewage and gas.

I read somewhere that a person who works 40 hours a week at a minimum wage job will make approximately $600 per month. This is a small amount of money for a person who actually works. By the time rent or mortage is paid there is very little if any left over. If the person must commute to work, it is impossible for them to make it on their own.

If You need Food Right Now

There are many food pantries which can and will help those in need. The Gleaner's Food Bank provides emergency food for those in need. They have a food bank and accept donations of food or money.

Feeding America gives out two (2) billion pounds of food each year. There is also a food bank locator on their site where you can type in your zipcode or click on your state to find them. They also accept donations of food or money.

Local Churches

Most local churches keep a food pantry. Usually they have food drives when they start running low and they also many times have clothing drives to give clothing to those in need. Some even give shelter to those who are homeless and need help getting back on their feet.

Organizations across the USA

This site has a fairly large list of pantries throughout the United States. E-mail addresses and phone numbers for each organization are posted.

Our local Safeway has a good policy. If you are hungry and you tell the cashier, they will let you go get a doughnut or piece of fruit for free. No questions asked. I have seen a lot of kids there asking for food because their parents are out of work.

Thank you for this..Yes, it makes me sad..to see this.

dkrainwater, that is a good thing for them to do. Not often do you hear of acts such as that in the world we now live in.

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 22 months ago

Mr. Happy, it is indeed sad, but we can help by finding pantries and donating food or money.

SirDent Hub Author 22 months ago

msorensson, it is sad and hard to look at. Jesus told His disciples, "The poor you will have with you always." We must do what we can while we are able to help.

This is agreat hub Sir...an very good reminder to all...If we just could feed our own first here in the USA we may be able to do more...

I know the Post Office has a food drive every year also and many are very generous, but sometimes the gov't makes so difficult for big stores to donate , instead they throw away the food.

Yet other stores sell left over day old bread etc. It is a big problem and you have reminded us all and showed us where we can go, very thoughtful and Loving...:O) Hugs G-Ma

Hi G-Ma. You know, it is my opinion that the USA has the land and resources to feed the whole world. The reason we don't is because we are a greedy bunch.

Thanks for your comment. I always appreciate it.

Good hub.You gave us a lot to think about. So many of us throw out leftovers without a thought to the fact that there people in our own town that need food.

My friend Janice works at the Dept.of Family Services , and I know for a fact that with emergency situations that a food stamp approval can be expedited.

They also have references as to where you can go in the community to obtain food immediately.

This is a good hub, and I know there are many needy families who could use this information.

Silly 22 months ago

You know Sir...every country has it's own special thing to grow and we could ALL help one another, in my humble opinion...instead of the competition and raping of the the seas we would all benefit.

Though we do have the resources shouldn't we take care of our own first? then there would be more of us to help the rest of the world...

Being sued? by whom the hungry? the poor ? and why would anyone give away rotten food?

God Bless and Keep Us trying and on the right paths...:O) Hugs G-Ma

bayoulady, that is a good point you made. The Department of Health and Human resources is a good place to get assistance when it is needed.

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 22 months ago

SweetiePie, what you said is so true. There are many needy families in this nation who n eed assistance of some sort. Some will never see this hub but if anyone who comes here knows of anyone needing help, don't hesitate to assist them with the info here.

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 22 months ago

Silly, I agree to a point. Some food is spoiled when it is considered no longer useful but some is still good. The lawyers in this nation are notoriuos for suing over little things.

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 22 months ago

GMa, I agree that every nation has it's own special thing to grow. I also know that the resources the United States has will feed every hungry child in the world. God has blessed us abundantly but we are so greedy we want it all to ourselves.

silly 22 months ago

wasnt saying it was rotten food,,,, but if they gave something to a food shelf and by any chance it had like peanuts in it and someone who was really allergic to ate it got sick they could be sued,, that is what i am talking about,,,

Give a man a fish, you've fed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you've fed him for a lifetime.

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 22 months ago

But you have to feed him while you teach him lest he starves to death.

Thanks for stopping by, Ann Lee. :)

It is so sad that there are so many hungry people out there. In our community our churches offer a free lunch every weekday. They have gotten together and each picked a seperated day so for 5 days a week anyway people are able to get a healthy, filling lunch. They also have pantrys. Thanks you for the information. Great hub.

Excellent work here my friend. I read this morning that 43 million Americans draw foodstamps. That is an incredible number. I appreciate your good and big heart.

SirDent Hub Author 21 months ago

Rossimobis, did you know that many church organizations have missionaries in the fields helping to feed those who are starving in many nations of the world?

The church has always fed those who need it even in the US. The first charities of the US were started by churches. James A Watkins wrote a hub about New York and as the hub went along charities came up and how they originated.

I appreciate the read and comment very much.

KoffeeKlatch Gals, it certainly is sad. I have heard that starving to death is the most terrifying and painful death one can go through.

Thanks for the read and comment.

USA is an amazing country and it is doing for people much more than other societies (I know, believe me) and all the help is done without showing off. Sometimes people are abusing this help.... But I suppose, it is better to help also those who are not so much in need than to miss those who really need it.

As a student my son volunteered in a local shelter for homeless and jobless people. People can apply there and they are given room and food for some period and they even get help in job searching. They cannot live there for a long time, but at least enough to find some job and place to live.

SirDent profile image

SirDent Hub Author 21 months ago

ReuVera, it is good to be able to help to feed those who are in need. Sheltyer is likewise important for those who are in need. There is a church in Florida that I wrote about a few months ago that helps homeles people all the time. The link is below.

Thank you very much for the read and comment.

In Nevada (Reno) we have "Hands of Hope". Their sponsors are local super markets. All one has to do is go there, give name and # of family members. No apps, no forms, no info other is needed. It is open one day each week.

Hello Brother Thank You and God Bless you for putting this hub out for our Lord. You are His hands and feet and this hub could help many. I pray many are led here. I know church's to be a huge help. There are many ministries like the salt projects (on line locate) that go out a few times per year with food, blankets, coats, back packs so on.

There are not nearly enough sources but the GOOD news is God is the source and with God all things are possible. Faith can move mountains. Keep eyes on things above. God will come when called. May the lost be found and the hungry fed. I wish I had hundrends of green bills to pass out, you would want to come to my block. I pray for that day. I am working on it with Christ. It is not easy but Christ will shine through for his Children and bring many to Him. Great writing and info. Keep on sir dent. I love ya Many Blessings Brother in Christ.

Hi Sky, I hope things are going well with you. Churches are indeed a big help to the hungry and the homeless. Your comment made me realize something that I should have known all along. God is our source and everything there is belongs to Him. There is enough food to feed all people and still have leftovers just as jesus did when He fed the 5000 with two fish and five pieces of bread.
